It was noted that Kazakhstan continues to be the world's largest producer of uranium.
Significance and prospects of the nuclear industry of the country were raised at a conference in Astana, "Days of Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Kazakhstan", Kazpravda.kz reports.
"Kazakhstan, as the largest world uranium producer and a country with a huge nuclear legacy, pays special attention to development of the nuclear industry. This area now solves the problems of economically efficient development of the nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear, radiation and ecological safety of the country, overcoming the effects of nuclear testing, the support of the international nuclear weapons non-proliferation regime and countering the threat of nuclear terrorism, the use of advanced nuclear and radiation technologies in industry and medicine," - said Vice-Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan Bakhytzhan Dzhaksaliyev.
Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Russian Federation), he added, since opening in 1956, is an internationally recognized research center, which cooperates with Kazakhstan since that time.
According to Dzhaksaliyev, a good example of cooperation of Kazakhstan and Russia in the nuclear industry is the creation in 2006 in Astana of the modern heavy-ion accelerator DC-60.
