To celebrate the achievements of 2013 and the opening of a new chapter in the history of the company, representatives of KATCO gathered today, Wednesday April 16th, on Tortkuduk’s industrial site in presence of many guests – local authorities, stakeholders, business partners,– and employees. KATCO LLP is a joined subsidiary of world’s uranium leading producers AREVA and NAC KAZATOMPROM JSC. Created in 1996 to develop and mine the Muyunkum and Tortkuduk uranium deposits in southern Kazakhstan, the company has become over the years the world’s largest uranium mining operation using in situ recovery (ISR) method. In 2013, KATCO has reached a new significant milestone by producing 4005 tons of annual production as well as the 20,000th ton of uranium since the start of industrial operation in 2005. These two achievements confirmed the successful production ramp-up initiated 8 years ago and mark the beginning of a new chapter in KATCO’s history. Gerard Fries, KATCO General Director, said at the ceremony: “After the pioneers’ era, those men and women who looked for more uranium in the region in the mid-90’s, and the successful production ramp-up from 2005 to 2013, a new phase begins for KATCO. From 2014 and beyond, we will have to prove our capacity to keep on producing 4000 tons of uranium per year on a long-term basis”. KATCO is engaged in an ambitious program aiming at producing 4000 tons of uranium per year until 2039. To take up this unprecedented industrial challenge, the company, with the support of its shareholders, has invested billions of tenges for many years to develop the production facilities and discover new uranium resources.
