Power start-up of the WWR-K research reactor

On 18.05.2016 the RSE "Institute of Nuclear Physics" initiated the power start-up of WWR-K reactor with the low-enriched uranium fuel. The works are carried out in accordance with the program agreed by the Committee of Nuclear and Energy Supervision and Control and the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The physical start-up of the reactor was performed in the period from 03.31.2016 to 21.04.2016.

The successful implementation of the project on conversion of WWR-K reactor to the low-enriched uranium fuel was noted in the Joint Statement of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the United States of America on cooperation in the field of non-proliferation and nuclear safety, announced on March 31, 2016 during the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington.
