23-24 June 2015 in order to study the international experience in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy and the development of mutually beneficial cooperation, CEO of JSC NAC Kazatomprom ASkar Zhumagaliyev conducted a working visit to the United Arab Emirates.
The head of the Kazakhstan company visited the construction site of a nuclear power plant Barakah that meets all safety standards and located 250 km from Abu-Dhabi. Askar Zhumagaliyev visited the strategic facility and got acquainted with all stages of NPP construction. Arab colleagues also demonstrated advanced technologies used in the project.
In order to avoid future shortages of electricity, as well as to diversify power supply and reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, the UAE Government plans to use nuclear energy. Barakah NPP is built by a consortium led by the South Korean company KEPCO. The nuclear power plant will consist of four units with APR-1400 reactors with a total capacity of 5.6 GW. Phased commissioning is scheduled for the 2017-2020.
During the visit, CEO Askar Zhumagaliyev had a meeting with the Chairman of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), member of the Executive Council of Abu-Dhabi, Khaldun Khalifa Al Mubarak and CEO of ENEC Mohammed Al Hammadi. The parties discussed the prospects of bilateral cooperation in the field of nuclear energy.
