The International Round Table “Peaceful use of atomic energy and strengthening the regime of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons” was held on May 31, 2018 in Almaty. It was dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Association “Nuclear Society of Kazakhstan” (NSK). Currently, NSK includes 45 legal entities, which include almost 35,000 physical persons. The purpose of NSK work is to achieve a broader knowledge in the use of atomic energy for development of productive capacities in the Republic and the growth of the well-being of its citizens.

The event was attended by the representatives of the companies included in NSK, such as JSC “NAC” Kazatomprom”, RSE “National Nuclear Center” RSE “Institute of Nuclear Physics” and others, as well as nuclear companies and organizations of several foreign countries – the European Union, WANO, International Scientific and Technical Center (ISTC), Edlow International Company, METR, Atom-CIS, MEPhI and others.

During opening of the Round Table Meeting, the President of the association Vladimir Shkolnik noted that NSK was established in 1993, when the country was in a difficult situation. It was required to preserve the nuclear industry of Kazakhstan, the staff of the nuclear industry enterprises and scientific organizations and to re-direct the activities for peaceful purposes.

At that time, Kazakhstan unambiguously supported the rejection of nuclear weapons. The peaceful nature of the nuclear industry of Kazakhstan and its strong commitment to strengthening of the non-proliferation regime have received the world-wide recognition, as mentioned in the international Forums such as the Global Nuclear Security Summit held in Washington and Seoul, the UN General Assembly and others.

The technical tour to RSE “Institute of Nuclear Physics” was provided on June 1, 2018 for the participants of the event. During the tour the participants visited the research reactor WWR-K, the Nuclear Security Training Center and the Center of Complex Integrated Research.
